  1. Create Crew at “Cashback” publication launch

    Earlier this month, Beth, Lauren and Chanelle travelled to Edinburgh to represent the Create Crew kids at the launch of the book – “Cashback – Making Crime Pay”.

    Sixteen projects from across Scotland contributed to the book, including our very own “Create Crew” which shows how the “Cashback” initiative takes money from criminals using the Proceeds of Crime Act and invests it back into communities.

    The book was formally launched at Craigmillar Library in Edinburgh by the Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill MSP. The event brought to life the pages of the book, showcasing some of the incredible projects that are giving a host of opportunities to young people and reducing anti-social behaviour as a result.

    Well done kids – you done us proud!

    We are delighted to announce that the Portal picked up the SURF Award for “Best Practice in Creative Regeneration” which was presented by Margaret Burgess MSP, Minister for Housing and Welfare, on Wednesday 4 December. This is fantastic recognition of all the creative work going on in the area, and in particular, of the Greater Govan community who are celebrated through this award.
    The Portal partners would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, volunteers, participants, artists, community organisations, arts organisations and stakeholders, who make this project successful. We are all looking forward to a busy year for Glasgow 2014.

    “Each year, SURF and the Scottish Government team up to deliver the national SURF Awards for Best Practice in Community Regeneration. The purpose of the annual SURF Awards process is:

    • To recognise and reward best practice and innovation in community regeneration;
    • To promote and disseminate best practice across Scotland as means of sharing knowledge and experience, and thereby enhancing future policy and practice;
    • To highlight the role that regeneration projects have in improving the wellbeing of individuals and communities

    With support from the Scottish Government, SURF will be arranging a series of study visits and workshops in the spring of 2014 to explore transferable lessons from the success of the winning SURF Awards projects. This is a great opportunity to raise the profile of the area and to support and strengthen partnerships.”

    Andy Milne, Chief Executive of SURF, said: “In these hard times, we are all keen to make the most of existing assets and successful initiatives. Every year, the SURF Awards highlight just how much great work is already being done in community regeneration all over Scotland. Sustaining and sharing that success is essential, both economically and socially.”

    Why did the judging panel like it?
    ‘The judges witnessed and were impressed with the joint vision and strong partnership working across all aspects of the project, which has successfully transformed derelict buildings into creative spaces that respond to the heritage of Govan. The Portal has enabled local groups to establish creative partnerships not just in Govan, but with other communities and organisations from across Glasgow. The project was selected as the winner because of the substantial involvement and drive from local people in creating a vibrant community focal point, and its considerable success in supporting the establishment and sustainability of new voluntary arts groups.’
    Congratulations to all the short-listed and winning projects from across Scotland whose inspirational work was showcased at the event, well done everybody!
