    PROTEST! Synopsis
At a time of intense public activism both at home and across the globe, explore the varied and fascinating history of public protest in the UK with the Independent Cinema Office’s new archive film programme: Britain on Film: Protest!

From a 1910 suffragette demonstration to striking coal miners in the Rhondda Valley, from female CND protesters spanning the Tamar Bridge to the defeat of fascists at London’s Cable Street, this absorbing, illuminating collection examines the nature of protests large and small and for causes regional and national, by participants fighting for suffrage and democracy, against exploitation and inequality, for fair wages and worker’s rights, for public safety, freedom and community and in the face of war and oppression.
Sourced from the national and regional archives and newly digitised, Britain on Film: Protest! tells a story not just about specific protests and their causes but about a tumultuous social, political and economic century and the constant, dynamic presence of public dissent and its effects as a weapon of change – at a time when raising our voices feels more essential than ever.

  3. Wishing you a Merry Xmas from Creative Steps!

We have been full of Christmas cheer for the last couple of weeks at Gallery 966. Last week we were crafting away like wee elves in preparation for Govan Loves Xmas and this week we have been recovering and celebrating the festivities with christmas parties and some more casual craft sessions.

First of all to thank everyone involved in Govan Loves Xmas! All of the groups worked so hard to get all the beautiful items ready for the sale – the stalls looked ace and that is thanks to you! Huge thanks to the members that volunteered to help to set up and work on the stalls despite the cold and wet. Thanks also to everyone who made it down to the fayre and visited the stalls – the funds from the sale will contribute directly to all the amazing activities and groups that take place in the gallery.

After recovering (and defrosting!) from Govan Loves Xmas, we’ve had lots of fun this week eating delicious snacks, making gorgeous smelling orange pomanders (had to look up the real name – before it was ‘cloves in oranges’), swapping presents and cards, and giggling away together.

What a great way to round off the year.. Groups will finish this week and recommence on the 14th Jan 🙂 see you then!

With special guests to be announced, it’s looking like a right guid night.

Friday 30th November, Pearce Institute, 840 Govan Road.

Pawm-Pawm Patrol has arrived at local nursery thanks to Bead ‘n Blether members Katie and Gillian.

This month Broomloan Nursery came to ask Katie and Gillian whether Bead ‘n Blether could get crafty to help brighten up the school. Katie got busy and started making pom-poms! In no time at all, she produced a bag full of gorgeous multi-coloured decorations. Magic!

The pom-poms will help to decorate the Macmillan Coffee Morning the nursery are hosting this month.
The event will take place 9-11am and 1-3pm, Friday 28th September at Broomloan Nursery, 635 Govan Road. Please come along and show your support – EVERYONE WELCOME!

The ceremony celebrated short films that have been made about the arts and humanities and their influence on communities.

Unfortunately we didn’t win the category, but we did have great fun trying! Many congratulations to everyone in the Create Crew for their brilliant work on the film and for being nominated.

  40. Clydeside Story – the final chapter?

It’s over a week since the curtain went down on the final performance of Clydeside Story, but we’re all still buzzing from the feedback from the show. All of the children and young people put their heart and souls into making it a day to remember, despite it being just a wee bit chilly in the big shed! CONGRATULATIONS to every one of you – you should be very, very proud of yourselves!

Moya, Jayne and everyone at Plantation would like to say THE BIGGEST THANK YOU to all the partners, staff and crew who made the day possible – and of course to the wonderful, supportive audience who came along on the day.

With so much going on across the 3 stages and screens we realise that some of you may have missed some of the action, but not to worry – we have been filming the “Making Of Clydeside Story” and the final performance, which will be available later in the year after the premiere screening at the BBC Neighbours Night., as part of the Commonwealth Festival, on 18th July. We’d like to say a big huge thanks to all the Crew who have done a magic job transforming a big, dusty, industrial shed into a funky multimedia stage for Clydeside Story tomorrow. It’s looking and sounding amazing, and after a preview of rehearsals we CAN’T WAIT to see the full performances from the children and young people from The Portal, SWAMP, Arden, Bright Night International and Vivace Theatre School. Everyone has worked so hard on this show, with each group bringing their own chapter of the ‘Clydeside Story’ to life through dance, drama, film, music, circus skills and physical theatre.

The stage is set, now all we need is YOU – see you there!

    Performances – 2pm & 6pm (45 mins approx)
    Thursday 3rd April 2014
The Govan Shed, 23 Clydebrae Street, Glasgow G51 2AJ.

We’ve locked DC in a cupboard and he’s not allowed out until he’s got the edit ready for the big premiere on Tuesday. He didn’t have that beard when he started, but don’t worry – we can assure you that no filmmakers were harmed in the making of this movie.

In case you’ve missed the previous blog the screening will take place at the Pearce Institute from 7pm – 10pm, followed by a Q and A with the filmmakers and live music from the Govan Allsorts and The Jaggy Nettles.

  51. Govan Banners Screening at Kinning Park

    Seniors at KP Cinema Club

A big thanks to Michael, Liam and Laura Jane at the KPC Social Cinema Club for making us feel very welcome at the screening of “The Govan Banners” on Tuesday night.

By great coincidence we had Sheila and Ernest in the audience – two young people from Spain, who had come to the Complex for a yoga class, but decided to stay for the film instead (sorry, yoga teacher). After the screening, Ernest shared his own family stories and they informed us that they had not been aware that people from Scotland had gone to fight fascism in the Spanish Civil War. We had an interesting and heartfelt discussion and by the end of the night the group had gained yet another group of young fans.

The film tells the story of the mysterious Govan Banners – found on May Day 1979 – wrapped in newspapers and forgotten for 40 years. Working with director, Kirsten MacLeod, The Seniors Film Club went on a journey to finally uncover their origins and tell the story behind their creation.

  53. The Portal Fun Day – Don’t Rain On Our Parade

The weather may have rained us out but we didn’t let that deter us from having a blast at The Portal fun day last month.  Rolling 3 events into one, such multi-taskers are we, we celebrated the new look Portal, launched our new Arts and Culture Programme, and also our new website, over an afternoon of fun-filled chaos.

The day was abuzz with a whole hubbub of activity going on around us.  From live music to football; from face-painting to circus skills; from arts and crafts to a community exhibition, there really was something to suit the whole family.  We even brought a taste of the Caribbean to Govan with our juice bar – which went down an absolute triumph!

It was also the first chance to catch the premier of our brand new promotional film ‘500 Days of (Scottish) Summer’, an aptly named piece given mother nature’s climate! The promo video, which can be found on our website page, received a great reception from all who saw it and who no doubt went home happy and with ‘Hall & Oates’ stuck in their head.

You can check out our pictures from the event on our facebook page, there are more to be added, but it gives a starter, and if you yourself took any, then feel free to add them too and don’t forget that by signing up to our newsletter you will be entered into a draw to win an ipad mini.

All in all it was a great day for the team, volunteers and hopefully for all of you!  And we showed that it takes more than a puddle or two (or three…or four…or…) to dampen our spirits.
